Mobile editor
A phone-first version of the editor at /m/<project>, with its own controls, over the same document.
Getting there
#Opening a project on a touch device (a phone, or a tablet without a mouse) goes to the mobile editor automatically, and share links land there too. A touchscreen laptop stays on the desktop editor.
Desktop editor
#The monitor button in the top strip asks, then opens the desktop editor and remembers the choice for this browser.
- The way back
- On a touch screen the desktop editor shows a banner with the way back. With a keyboard it is Help, then Mobile editor, or search for it.
- Forgetting
- Opening the mobile editor by any route forgets the choice.
- Links
- Add ?mobile=1 to a project link to land on the mobile editor on any device, or ?desktop=1 to open the desktop editor once without remembering.
Plan and 3D
#Plan and 3D side by side in the header switch panes, one pane open at a time. Edits, selection and level stay in step with everyone else in the project.
Header
#Back, the project's name with a dot and a word for the save under it, Plan and 3D, Undo and Redo. A tablet adds the level and Search. On a phone, Search commands is in Tools, View.
Plan controls
#The chips over the plan, where the thumbs reach them.
- Level
- Top left, named for the level you are on. Tap it to switch levels and to show or hide layers. On a tablet the level is in the header and this is a Layers button.
- Select many
- Beside it: taps add to the selection instead of replacing it.
- Fit plan
- Bottom left, frames the whole plan.
- Grid snap
- Bottom right, lit while positions snap to the grid.
One finger drags the plan. Two fingers zoom around the point between them and drag at the same time.
Tap a wall, item, light or camera to select it. A small area around the finger is checked, so a thin wall is easy to hit. Tap empty space to clear the selection, or double-tap it to fit the plan.
Hold a finger on something for a moment for its menu, or on empty space for the plan's own: select all, make a room here, fit.
In Orbit, one finger turns the view around the set and two fingers pinch to zoom and drag to slide. In Top, one finger drags the map and two fingers zoom. A finger on something you have not selected moves the view, never the thing.
Tap an item, light or camera to select it, then drag it across the floor. Done on the selection bar puts it down, since a tap on empty space is not always read as one under a finger.
3D row
#The row along the top of the phone's 3D pane: the view mode, the exposure, the daylight and Fit.
- Mode
- The first chip names the mode you are in. Tap it for Orbit, Top, Walk and Fly, and Pilot when there is something to drive or a camera to look through.
- Fit
- The square at the right frames the whole set.
- Exposure and Daylight
- Each reads its value under its name and opens a tray under the row. Neither opens by itself, and a second tap or a tap anywhere else closes it without doing anything else.
- Tools, View
- Top, Cutaway, Ceilings and Focus are there, and any of them can be pinned. Cutaway ghosts the walls between you and the set, Ceilings taps through auto, shown and hidden, and Focus frames what is selected.
- Walk, fly and pilot
- Take the whole screen, so the row gives way to Walk, Fly, the stop and Done along the top.
The stop the picture is exposed at, the second chip in the 3D row.
- Closed
- Reads what the meter is calling for: Auto exposure over the stop while the meter rides the light, Exposure once it is held, and Camera while you look through a camera that exposes itself.
- Open
- Tap it for Auto and Hold, the stop, and the ISO, shutter, ND and dynamic range under them.
- Hold
- Keeps the stop the meter is on right now, so the picture then changes with the light instead of the meter riding it. Auto hands it back.
- Shared
- These are the project's, so everyone sees the same exposure. The Settings page's Look section sets the same values.
- Manual cameras
- Watching or piloting a camera on manual exposure, the stop is that camera's own, and setting it sets the camera. Its ISO, shutter and ND show here but are set in its Edit tab.
- Walk, fly and pilot
- Keep the stop in the row along the top, where the joystick is not.
The third chip in the 3D row reads Daylight over the time of day, or Off. Tap it for the tray.
- Sun
- The switch at the left of the tray turns daylight on and off.
- Slider
- Scrubs the time of day, with Rise, Noon and Set marked under the track. Both are saved with the project, so everyone on it sees the same light.
- First drag
- A project with no location gets one on the first drag, Los Angeles unless you change it, and the tray names the place it writes to.
- Moon
- How much of it is lit while it is above the horizon, and a phase picker that sets its shape without moving the date.
- On the desktop
- The location, the date and true north, and the moon's color temperature, brightness and drawn size, are set in the desktop's Lights list. This phone's Settings page sets the moon's size too.
- Sun off
- There is no time to scrub, so the tray holds the switch alone.
- Closed
- Every time you open the editor, so the slider never covers the set until you ask for it.
With a camera in the project, the 3D pane shows what it sees in a small window: at the bottom right on a phone, above the bars, and at the top right on a tablet.
- Which camera
- The selected one, else the last one you watched or piloted, else the first on the level. Never the one you are looking through.
- Move and size
- Drag its title to move it, and it settles in the nearest corner. The corner button at its foot sizes it.
- Collapse
- Folds it to a pill with the camera's name and lens, and a tap on the pill opens it again. The editor remembers which until you leave it.
- Full screen
- Tap the picture to pilot that camera with the whole pane, or to watch it, hands off, where it cannot be piloted.
- Sheets
- A sheet raised to full height hides it, and it comes back as it was when the sheet goes down.
Walk puts a joystick under your left thumb: push it to move, further to move faster, and drag anywhere else to look around.
- Buttons
- Set the eye height. Run doubles the pace, and Exit returns to Orbit.
- Fly
- In the corner above the joystick, takes the floor away. A second stick under your right thumb is the height, and the eye heights go. Fly again puts you back on the floor.
- Cutaway
- Still ghosts the walls you have flown outside of and the ceilings you are above.
